Timing belt or chain: list of engines

For every engine in the database: the timing drive and its replacement interval. Engines marked as checked have the interval and timing faults checked against sources.

Why it matters

When a timing belt snaps or a chain jumps, most engines bend their valves and the repair can cost half the car. A belt is replaced by mileage or age, whichever comes first, usually with its pulleys and the water pump. A wet belt (e.g. PureTech, 1.0 EcoBoost) needs regular checks because it can break up and block the oil pump strainer. A chain has no replacement interval but can stretch: a rattle on cold start is the sign to check it.

Known engine faults

0.9 / 1.0 TCe & 1.0 SCe (H4B / H4D)

Timing chain stretch or rattle (0.9 TCe H4Bt)

usually 100,000–180,000 km · Medium risk
engine codes: H4B, H4BT

Signs: Rattle for a few seconds on cold start, later camshaft/crankshaft correlation fault codes and engine light

Fix: Do not ignore the noise; measure chain stretch (live data or inspection) and replace chain, tensioner and guides; change oil more often than the long factory interval

€600–1,200

1.0 / 1.2 / 1.4 / 1.6 Turbo petrol (Opel, 2014–2022)

Timing chain stretch (1.4 Turbo)

usually 100,000–200,000 km · Medium risk
engine codes: B14XFT, B14XFL, D14XFT, D14XFL

Signs: Metallic rattle for a few seconds on cold start; later engine light with cam/crank correlation codes P0016 / P0017

Fix: Check cam phase deviation in live data; if out of limits, replace the chain, guides and tensioner; keep oil changes short

€700–1,400

1.0 / 1.2 / 1.4 Twinport / Ecotec (Opel Family 0)

Timing chain stretch (short trips, late oil changes)

usually 60,000–180,000 km · High risk

Signs: Rattle for a few seconds after a cold start, later also when warm; timing codes, rough running

Fix: Replace chain, tensioner and guides as soon as the rattle appears; change oil at least every 15,000 km or yearly

€400–900

1.0 / 1.2 PureTech (EB)

Wet timing belt wears early and sheds debris (built to mid-2022)

usually 40,000–140,000 km · High risk
model years 2012–2022 only

Signs: Flaking or swollen belt seen through the oil filler, rubber bits in the oil or filter, later oil pressure or timing warnings

Fix: Measure belt width with the PSA gauge at every service and replace the belt early if it is out of spec; ask a Stellantis dealer about the extended cover (10 years / 175,000 km)

€0–1,500

Oil pickup strainer blocked by belt debris (low oil pressure)

usually 40,000–150,000 km · High risk
model years 2012–2022 only

Signs: Oil pressure warning, noisy valvetrain, cam timing fault codes, limp mode

Fix: Stop the engine at once; drop the sump, clean the strainer or replace the oil pump, clean or replace the VVT and oil pump solenoids and the turbo oil-feed banjo bolt, and fit a new belt

€0–2,500

Brake vacuum pump fails from belt debris (recall)

usually 40,000–150,000 km · High risk
model years 2013–2020 onlyengine codes: EB2DT, EB2DTS, EB2ADT, EB2ADTS, EB2ADTD, EB2DTSD

Signs: Hard brake pedal, little brake assistance, brake or oil pressure warning

Fix: Check open recalls by VIN (2020 campaign for cars built 3/2013–4/2017, 2023 campaign for 4/2017–12/2020); always replace the vacuum pump when a degraded belt is replaced

€0–900

1.0 / 1.4 Boosterjet

Timing chain tensioner rattle on cold start (early 1.4)

usually 30,000–150,000 km · Medium risk
model years 2015–2018 onlyengine codes: K14C

Signs: Rattle from the front of the engine for a few seconds after a cold start

Fix: Have a Suzuki dealer check by VIN whether the updated tensioner is fitted; if the rattle lasts longer, measure chain stretch and replace the chain, guides and tensioner together

€400–1,500

1.0 / 1.4 T-GDi (Hyundai-Kia Kappa turbo)

Timing chain tensioner / chain stretch: rattle on cold start

usually 40,000–150,000 km · High risk

Signs: Rattle for a few seconds after a cold start, later camshaft timing fault codes

Fix: Check chain stretch and the tensioner revision; replace chain, tensioner and guides with the updated parts before the chain can skip

€500–1,500

1.0 / 1.6 MPI (EA211: CHYA / CWVA)

1.0 MPI: camshaft timing oil control valve sticks (coked oil passages)

usually 60,000–160,000 km · Medium risk
model years 2011–2016 onlyengine codes: CHYA, CHYB

Signs: Poor pull and uneven running, engine light with codes such as P0010, P0016 or P0341

Common questions

Which engines have a wet timing belt?

1.0 / 1.2 PureTech (EB), 1.0 EcoBoost / 1.0 Ti-VCT (Fox), 2.0 EcoBlue (Ford 'Panther').

How often is a timing belt replaced?

It depends on the engine: usually between 90,000 and 240,000 km or 5–10 years. Your engine's interval is in the table; whichever comes first applies.
