Used diesel: DPF, EGR and AdBlue

The exhaust after-treatment is where modern diesels most often get expensive, especially in town driving. Here are its known problems for the checked diesel engines, with the mileage where they usually appear and a typical price.

Before you buy a used diesel

  • Ask how much the car is driven in town: short trips are the hardest on the DPF and EGR.
  • Read the DPF soot and ash load and the number and frequency of regenerations with a diagnostic tool.
  • Check the oil level: if it rises, there is fuel in the oil from failed regenerations.
  • On AdBlue cars, check for warnings and whether the heater, pump and NOx sensor were replaced.
  • Test drive on the motorway: power loss or limp mode points to the EGR, turbo or DPF.
